Walter Steven Grimes

Sep 1, 1956 — May 2, 2026

Crosby

Walter Steven Grimes, affectionately known as Steve, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Crosby, Texas, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 1, 1956, in Baytown, Texas, Steve's life was marked by unwavering dedication, generosity, and a profound love for his family and the outdoors.

A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Steve embarked on a career in scaffolding that spanned an impressive 45 years, from 1979 through 2024. Beginning humbly as a helper, he rose through the ranks to become a respected Site Manager. Among his most notable professional achievements was his work on the scaffolding for the pinnacle of the San Jacinto Monument and the Twin Towers at Exxon BOP with Palmer Scaffolding—a project distinguished enough to be recognized in a scaffolding industry publication. Steve's commitment and expertise in his trade remain a testament to his skill and dedication.

Steve's passions extended well beyond his professional life. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting, always ready for the next road trip or adventure. Whether embarking on a short outing or a lengthy vacation, Steve made cherished memories wherever he went. At home, he took great pride in maintaining his yard to perfection, famously mowing the lawn every single day without fail. His dedication to this simple but meaningful ritual was a source of pride and joy. Equally renowned among family and friends was his love for grilling and smoking meats and cheeses. Possessing not just one but multiple smokers, Steve delighted in preparing flavorful, slow-cooked fare, sharing his culinary passion with all who knew him.

Above all else, Steve's greatest joy was his family. He valued his loved ones above all, grounding his life in care, strength, and generosity. He was a man who lived fully and loved deeply, always placing family at the heart of his world.

Steve is lovingly remembered by his wife, Tammy Grimes; his sons Shane Grimes, and Selby Grimes with his wife Megan; and his daughters Brandy Grimes, and Stephanie Grimes with her husband Mathew. He was a devoted grandfather to ten grandchildren, including Shawn—who continues the proud tradition as a fourth-generation Army serviceman—Rylee, Bailee, Hailee, Hunter, Gabriel, Marley, Zoe, Lela Jane (RIP), and soon-to-arrive Easton Walker in July.

His family legacy is rooted in a proud military tradition: Walter Seburn Grimes, Steve’s father, was first-generation Army; Steve himself was second-generation; his son William Shane third-generation; and William Shawn now carries the mantle as fourth-generation Army, reflecting a heritage of service and commitment.

Steve is also survived by his sister Ginger Forse and her husband James; his brother Keith Grimes and his wife Tammy; numerous nieces and nephews including Chris Forse and his wife Lacey, Tiffany Forse and her significant other Brandon, Josh Grimes and his wife Deb, and Cody Grimes and his wife Jessica; in addition to many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews. He was close to his cousins Glenda Latham and Jana Cross, who share in his profound loss.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Seburn Grimes and Helen Bernice Grimes; his aunt Mary Smith; and his granddaughter Lela Jane Malone, whose memory remains deeply cherished.

Walter Steven Grimes was a man of strength and warmth, whose legacy is defined not only by his career accomplishments but also by his everyday acts of kindness and his unshakeable devotion to family. His life story speaks to a man who loved living, who honored his heritage, and who found profound joy in simple pleasures—whether a perfectly mowed lawn, a carefully smoked brisket, or time spent with those he held dear.

Family, friends, and all who knew Steve are invited to celebrate his remarkable life on June 13th at 2 PM at Northeast Freeway Baptist church, 1635 Runneburg Rd., Crosby. Food will be served.  It will be a gathering filled with remembrance, respect, and gratitude for a life well lived and a man dearly loved.

Walter Steven Grimes’s journey may have come to a close, but the memories he created and the love he shared will endure in the hearts of many. He is now at peace, reunited with loved ones in Heaven, free from pain and embraced by everlasting grace.
