Tom built a family. He built a career. He built memories. And through the lives of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, the things he built will continue long after his hands have come to rest.
Thomas Joseph Mandeville, Sr., affectionately known as Tom, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 15, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born on April 10, 1937, to parents, Leonard and Ethel Crotty Mandeville in Jacksonville, Illinois, and lived a life shaped by hard work, devotion to family, and the steady satisfaction of building something lasting with his own hands.
After graduating high school, Tom met then married the love of his life, Betty, and they shared 64 beautiful years together building not only a family, but a lifetime of experiences, teamwork, adventures, and laughter, and eventually made their home in Magnolia, Texas, filled with love and making countless memories. Tom was also a construction man through and through, spending his career mainly in concrete work and serving in Construction as a Concrete Supervisor. His work was more than simply a career - it reflected who he was. And after retiring in 2019, he closed a long chapter of labor marked by skill, discipline, and pride in a job well done. He loved using his hands to help people, and that instinct carried through every part of his life. He was hardworking, gifted at building, fixing, and creating things, not only to perfect his work, but to shape a life defined by purpose and care.
Outside of work, Tom embraced the things that brought him joy with the same wholehearted spirit. He enjoyed playing golf for as long as he could, and loved sports, especially the Astros and Texans, and being from Detroit, his Detroit Lions and Tigers. He gave his time generously to his children, helping and coaching his son’s little league teams as well as his daughter’s softball. Those seasons of games, practices, and encouragement became part of the strong foundation he built for his family. One of the special places in Tom and Betty's story was their place in Sargent, Texas, where they could escape the busyness of everyday life and simply relax together. There, amid fishing, crabbing, and most of all, long stretches of peaceful rest, they enjoyed a place that brought comfort and happiness together.
Of all the roles Tom held in life, the ones he cherished most were being a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. Family was at the center of who he was, and he loved life and his family that he poured into so deeply. He was a joy to have in the lives of those who knew him, and the memories made with him are now priceless treasures, held close in loving hearts until that hoped-for day of reunion.
His life was built with care, endurance, and love, and in the quiet moments of fishing, crabbing, and resting beside the one he loved most, Betty.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Mandeville, his partner of 64 years; his daughter, Theresa Anne Shular; his son, Vincent Patrick Mandeville and his wife, Diana May; and his son, Thomas Joseph Mandeville Jr. His love and legacy continues through his grandchildren, David Morris Bishop, Kevin Lee Shular, Zachary Mandeville, Amanda Michele Shular, Mickey Brian Mandeville Jr., Holden Jameson Mandeville, Brendan Patrick Mandeville, and Brandan Lee Shular, as well as his great-grandchildren, Lillian Bishop, Sophia Shular, Jamie Beaver, Elena Shular, Cash Beaver, Naomi Mandeville, Payton Shular, Preston Shular, Paxton Shular, and Kyler Shular. Each of them carries forward a part of his strength, humor, and generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Mickey Brian Mandeville, Sr., and his son-in-law, Monte Shular, who are all now enjoying their long-awaited family reunion.
