Stuart Randolph Veldman (“Randy” aka “Stu”), 59, of Galveston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, August 16. Randy was born on June 25, 1966, in Austin, Texas, the youngest child of four of Dr. Donald Veldman and Janet Veldman.
Randy attended Gullett Elementary, Lamar Junior High School, and McCallum High School, graduating in 1984. Following high school, Randy attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State). Randy spent several years in the hotel industry post-college before entering the building supply industry in the 90s, where he spent his remaining working years. Randy found his niche in the building industry as a gifted salesman, perfecting the skills of developing close personal relationships with clients and colleagues. Randy’s quick wit and sense of humor were also legendary. Anyone who met Randy can tell a story (or many stories) about how Randy made them laugh, usually spontaneously.
Randy was a skilled athlete going back to his early years, thriving in baseball as a youth, and later excelling in basketball, golf, and tennis into adulthood. Randy loved to remind his brother Greg and friend Rory Nocker of the time he won the MVP of the basketball league they were in together many years ago. Randy also spoke often about his weekly tennis game that spanned many years with friends, Rory, Frank Pugh, and Ben Carssow.
In December 2012, Randy suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that altered the course of the last 12 and a half years of his life. Although the injury caused mobility and cognitive issues for him, Randy remained kind, loving, and thoughtful for his remaining years. Randy was blessed beyond description to have met and fallen in love with Brooke Ellig Olm before his accident. Although there were many challenges along the way, Brooke cared for Randy for those final 12 and a half years in what can only be described as the most perfect example of unconditional love the world has seen.
Randy is survived by his life partner, Ms. Brooke Olm, sister Audrey Veldman and husband Kim Wilson, sister Cathy Veldman and partner Joe Biedron, brother Greg Veldman and wife Cheryl Veldman, nieces Amy Goyne, Marissa Veldman, Nora Wilson, and Alison Veldman Wilson Crow. Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Donald Veldman and Janet Veldman, and niece Kelsey Veldman.
A very special thanks to Ms. Melissa Coffey for her four plus years of dedicated service as Randy’s caregiver.
A virtual memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 28, at 6:00 PM CDT. This will be a very interactive service. We are hoping that as many attendees as possible will be willing to share a story or memory (or two) about Randy when we open the floor for comments. Attendees are not required to participate, but please consider sharing a memory with the group if you can attend. The link for the meeting is below.
