George O'Kelley Hughes III, affectionately known as Kelley, passed away quietly and peacefully at his home in Missouri City, Texas, on December 20, 2025. Born on May 23, 1955, in Houston, Texas, Kelley lived a life marked by adventure, dedication, and love for his family and friends.

Kelley's career began as a Merchant Marine, where he spent many years at sea aboard various ships. His unwavering commitment to his profession led him to achieve the rank of Chief Engineering Officer. He later transitioned to a respected position as a Senior Project Engineer in the refining and petrochemical sector along the Texas Gulf Coast, collaborating with notable companies such as Air Liquide and Factory Mutual Engineering. Kelley's exemplary contributions to the field earned him the esteemed title of "Engineer of the Year" in 1989, 1992, and 1994.

Kelley’s formative years were filled with cherished memories, growing up in Bellaire where he enjoyed biking to AstroWorld and the Astrodome. He excelled athletically, playing as an Offensive Guard on the 1971 District Champion Team and the 1972 Bi-District Champion Team, earning All-City Honors. Additionally, he lettered his senior year in Track and Field in the Pole Vault. Kelley proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1977, recounting fond memories of his college years and his Merchant Marine training at the Port of Galveston.

Beyond his professional achievements, Kelley was full of life and enjoyed engaging in various hobbies. He relished driving around while listening to music, passionately followed the Texas Aggies, and found joy in fishing and hunting. His passion for music was evident through his karaoke performances, particularly his favorite, "Brown Eyed Girl." Kelley also enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle and watching his favorite television shows on MeTV.

Kelley took pride in his community involvement, having served as a Volunteer Fireman and EMT in Lakeway. He held a deep affection for his memories spent at the family ranch in Bronte, Texas, as well as his time living in Austin (Lakeway), Sugar Land, and Missouri City (Quail Valley).

He is survived by his beloved children, Jennifer Ford, Joshua Hughes, and Jacob Hughes; son-in-law Brad Ford; granddaughter Grace Ford; and brother-in-law Randy Teufel. He also leaves behind his loving friends, Kevin, Betsy, Kaylee, and John Paul Hancock.

He was predeceased by his father, George O'Kelley Hughes, Jr.; his mother, Betty Jane Higginbotham Hughes; and his sister, Amy Hughes Teufel.

Kelley will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, unwavering dedication to his profession, and the love he shared with those around him. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
