In Loving Memory of David Joe Wathen
January 14, 1958 – October 14, 2026
David Joe Wathen, 68, of Texas, passed away on October 14, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of hard work, cherished memories, and stories worth telling.
Born on January 14, 1958, in Palestine, Texas, David grew up alongside his brother, developing the determination and independent spirit that would come to define much of his life.
Following his graduation from high school, David's athletic abilities earned him a football opportunity at the University of Houston. After one season on the field, however, he decided that college life wasn't the path he wanted to follow. Instead, he traded the football field for the oil fields of Texas, beginning a career that would become his life's work.
David quickly proved himself in the demanding world of the oil industry. Through hard work, determination, and a willingness to take on responsibility, he rose to running drilling rigs at a young age. He continued in that role throughout his career, dedicating decades of his life to an industry that required grit, perseverance, and an unwavering work ethic.
Upon retirement, David traded the long days and demanding pace of the oil fields for a quieter, simpler way of life.
Much of his time was spent on his front porch, where the days moved a little slower and there was always an opportunity to reflect, share a story, or try his hand at something new. He enjoyed smoking meats, experimenting with making moonshine, and appreciating the simple pleasures that came with a life lived on his own terms.
David also had a love for gardening and could often be found tending to his greenhouse, usually with his beloved Jack Russell terrier, Pucky, faithfully following close behind. Whether working with his hands, caring for his plants, or simply enjoying the company of his four-legged companion, David found contentment in the everyday moments that made a house feel like home.
His life was one of contrasts—from the excitement of college football to the demanding oil fields, and eventually to the peaceful solitude of his front porch. Through it all, David remained a man who carved his own path, worked hard for what he had, and found joy in life's simpler offerings.
While a person's life can be measured in years, it is perhaps better remembered through the stories they leave behind, the work of their hands, and the moments shared with those who took the time to listen.
David's story may have come to an end, but the memories of a life lived on his own terms will remain.
May he rest in peace, with the hard work behind him, the sun setting over the porch, and Pucky forever by his side.
